Promoting an Initiative for Climate Change Adaptation in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico

In 2013, I secured funds for the design and implementation of a strategy to manage the effects of climate change on wetland habitats in the northern Gulf of California, Mexico. The three-year project included dissemination of information on climate change in community forums, identifying marine and coastal habitat indicators for climate change, and developing a monitoring manual.

We also conducted a training workshop for Mexican environmental authorities. It covered topics on understanding climate change causes and effects, learning to plan for community resilience, and implementing a communication strategy for climate change. The workshop's goal was to provide the staff guidelines for the design of an adaptation strategy for climate change.

My team carried out an environmental education costest Local problems, young solutions. and emerging actions for climate change, which attracted youth from two fishing communities. Besides, we conducted community conversations bringing together students, environmental authorities, community organizers, and other stakeholders.

The project produced two peer-reviewed articles, Vulnerability to climate change of hypersaline salt marshes in the northern Gulf of California, and Social indicators of vulnerability for fishing communities in the northern Gulf of California, Mexico: Implications for climate change. Both articles authored by Hem NaliniMorzaria-Luna and others.
